PADI Open Water Course
The course is conducted on Hamilton Island amongst the Whitsunday Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. Your course starts in the classroom above the diveshop on “Front Street” marina side of Hamilton Island. Pool sessions are held on the resort side of the island in the “Dolphin Pool” a 4m deep dive pool. There are normally two days of pool and theory before you are ready to step out on Reef Spirit (link to vessels) our purpose built dive vessel for two fantastic days out on the Great Barrier Reef.
You will require a dive medical from a doctor if you have any of the following conditions: Asthma or wheezing, Diabetes, Fainting, seizures or blackouts, chronic bronchitis or persistent chest complaints, Chronic sinus conditions, collapsed lung, brain or spinal cord injury or disorder, Heart disease of any kind, Chest surgery, High or low blood pressure, ear surgery on antidepressants.
To avoid disappointment have your doctor perform a AS 4005.1 Scuba Diving Medical – link to medical form
Sample Itinerary
The PADI Open Water Course runs over 4 full days (8:30am - 5:00pm).
Day 1: Academic and Pool training
- 8:30am Meeting at our facility on Marina Side.
- 8:45am Theory lectures.
- 11:30am Lunch break
- 1:00pm Pool training.
- 5:00pm Return to your accommodation.
Day 2: Academic and Pool training
- 8:30am Meeting at our facility on Marina Side.
- 8:45am Pool training.
- 11:30am Lunch break.
- 12:30pm Classroom lectures.
- 5:00pm Return to your accommodation.
Day 3: Diving the Outer Great Barrier Reef
- 9:00am Meeting at our facility on Marina Side, board our vessel REEF SPIRIT for briefing.
- 9:30am Depart HAMILTON ISLAND Marina for your transfer to the outer reef where you will do your first 2 training dives towards your certification. Lunch included.
- 5:00pm Return back to HAMILTON ISLAND Marina.
Day 4: Diving the Outer Great Barrier Reef
- 9:00am Meeting at our facility on Marina Side, board our vessel REEF SPIRIT for briefing.
- 9:30am Depart HAMILTON ISLAND Marina for your transfer to the outer reef where you will do your final 2 training dives - 4 dives in total on this Course. Lunch included.
- 5:00pm Return back to HAMILTON ISLAND Marina.
Cancellation Policy
- Full refund will be given due to failing the dive medical.
- $200 cancellation fee if course is cancelled on day 1.
- $350 cancellation fee if course is cancelled on day 2.
- Full cancellation fees apply after 5pm on day 2

Snorkelling is also available from these trips. So non-diving friends and family may also attend.
Requirements
- Ability to swim 200 metres
- Minimum age is 12 years (subject to a medical assessment). Children under the age of 15 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
- Dive medical to the Australian Standard AS4005-1 is required. Australian medical standards are different to those overseas.
- A medical obtained overseas will most likely not be accepted in Australia. Some medical conditions may preclude you from diving. Asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, high or low blood pressure and pregnancy are the most common ones encountered.
Diving Conditions
Water temperature varies from 21-28°C, offering comfortable diving. Average visibility ranges from 5-15 metres, depending on the tide, location and weather. The visibility is generally better at Bait Reef..

Are Pregnant, suffer from; Epilepsy or Tuberculosis or long term lung disease. Or are flying in the next 12hrs after a single scuba dive and 24 after 2 dives.
